The Ultimate Bracket Strategy Guide
Every year, millions of brackets get busted in the first weekend. Upsets happen, cinderella runs emerge, and your carefully researched picks crumble. But some strategies hold up better than others.
Here's how to give yourself the best shot at winning your bracket pool.
1. Understand How Scoring Works
Most bracket pools use escalating scoring — each round is worth more than the last. The default SuperBrackets scoring is:
- Round of 64: 10 points per correct pick
- Round of 32: 20 points
- Round of 16: 40 points
- Regional Finals: 80 points
- National Semifinals: 160 points
- Championship: 320 points
This means the championship pick alone is worth as much as all 32 first-round games combined. Getting the late rounds right matters far more than nailing every 1 vs 16 matchup.
2. The Chalk vs. Chaos Spectrum
Chalk means picking all the higher seeds. Chaos means loading up on upsets. Neither extreme is optimal.
The sweet spot: Pick chalk in the first two rounds, then get creative in the later rounds. Here's why:
- In the Round of 64, 1-seeds win ~99% of the time against 16-seeds. Don't overthink it.
- 5 vs 12 games are the classic upset spot — about 35% of the time, the 12-seed wins.
- By the Regional Finals, seed advantage matters less. This is where bold picks pay off.
3. Pick At Least Two Upsets in the Round of 64
A bracket with zero upsets looks exactly like everyone else's bracket. You need differentiation to win a pool.
Target the 5/12 and 6/11 matchups. Look for:
- 12-seeds from mid-major conferences that play strong defense
- 11-seeds that came through the play-in games with momentum
- 6-seeds with key injuries or poor late-season form
4. Your Champion Pick Is Everything
Given the escalating scoring, your champion pick is the single most leveraged decision in your bracket.
Don't pick a team lower than a 3-seed to win it all unless you have a very specific reason. Historically, the champion is a 1 or 2 seed about 85% of the time.
Do consider which 1-seed has the easiest path to the championship. Not all 1-seeds are created equal — bracket placement matters.
5. Pool Size Matters
In a small pool (under 10 people), play it relatively safe. Chalk brackets win more often in small pools because you need fewer points to win.
In a large pool (50+ people), you need differentiation. Multiple people will have similar chalk brackets. Bold late-round picks — like a 3-seed in the championship — give you a unique path to victory.
6. Don't Chase Last Year's Storylines
The team that had a cinderella run last year won't necessarily repeat it. Roster turnover, transfer portal movement, and coaching changes make year-over-year comparisons unreliable.
Focus on this year's data: adjusted efficiency ratings, strength of schedule, and recent form.
